In 1915 the original boilers were replaced with compressors and fog horns run with kerosene. Because the Fog Signal at a lighthouse was used for navigation, every one had to be unique. A 4th Order Fresnel lens, it would generate alternate red and white flashes of light every 30 seconds that would be visible 17 nautical miles (31 km) out to sea. The Head Lightkeeper and his wife took a room at the back of the house- farthest from the fog horn. WWII at the Lighthouse Fifteen days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Union Oil tanker S.S. Montebello takes on a cargo of oil at Port San Luis. A few hours later, Japanese submarine I-21 sinks the Montebello near Cambria, about four miles west of San Simeon.
