Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers: Board Member Job Description

The mission of the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers (“the organization”) is to restore, preserve, maintain and operate the Point San Luis Lighthouse Station, circa 1890, as an historical, educational and recreational site, for the use and enjoyment of the public through tours, events and educational programs. The Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers Board is considered a “working board.”  Board members actively participate in a variety of activities and committees that are essential to the success of the organization.  These include Financial Oversight, Event Planning and Implementation, Docent-led Lighthouse Tours, Historic Research, Site Restoration Work Crews, Grant Writing, and Docent-led Pecho Coast Trail Hikes.

Expectations of the Board of Directors as a Whole

As the highest leadership body of the organization and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the Board of Directors is responsible for:

  • Determining the mission and purposes of the organization

  • Selecting and evaluating the performance of the Executive Director

  • Strategic and organizational planning

  • Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management

  • Fundraising and resource development

  • Approving and monitoring the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers’ public image

  • Assessing its own performance as the governing body of the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers

Expectations of Individual Board Members

Each individual Board member is expected to:

  • Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs and needs

  • Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements

  • Serve as advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers to advance its mission

  • Leverage connections, networks and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers’ mission

  • Make a meaningful personal contribution

  • Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and that can influence public policy

  • Prepare for, attend and conscientiously participate in Board meetings

  • Participate fully in one or more committees / activities.

Board Members are also expected to:

  • Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies and Board resolutions

  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings

  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers.
